Joules to kWh Calculator

The joule (J) is the fundamental SI unit of energy, named after physicist James Prescott Joule. While scientifically precise, joules are impractically small for describing household electricity consumption, which is why the kilowatt-hour (kWh) was adopted as the standard billing unit.

To put the relationship in perspective: lifting a 1 kg object by 1 meter against gravity requires about 9.8 joules. Boiling a standard kettle of water requires about 360,000 joules (0.1 kWh). Running a typical household for a day might require 36,000,000,000 joules (10 kWh). The kilowatt-hour is simply a more convenient scale for everyday energy transactions.

In scientific and engineering contexts, energy is often expressed in joules or megajoules (MJ). Energy density of fuels, for instance, is typically given in MJ/kg: petrol has about 46 MJ/kg, while a lithium-ion battery stores about 0.5-0.9 MJ/kg. Converting these values to kWh (divide MJ by 3.6) makes it easier to compare with electricity consumption and costs. One liter of petrol contains about 33.7 MJ or 9.36 kWh of energy, though only about 25-30% of that energy reaches the wheels in a combustion engine.
